a. Lostfield: Internal affairs

After listening to this album through the first time, I have to admit I thought to myself that this would be an easy burn. All the elements are there, it’s going to be such a fun exercise to tear this one a new arsehole. But then, as my fingers hovered over the keyboard ready to strike, I thought to myself: “am I really such a cunt? Tearing apart a young band’s debut EP would be like kicking a puppy or raping a baby seal, not exactly nice things to be doing”. So I put the album on again to give it another chance. Memories come flooding back. “What the hell”, I say to myself, “let’s fuck this pup up”.
a. Lostfield hail from Colombia, but that has little to do with their music. Certainly, no salsa, merengue or bagenato influences in here. No, a. Lostfield play a mixture of heavy-ish riffs with acoustic interludes with clean vocals. The heavier moments are, to be honest, incredibly dull. The riffs are uninteresting and repetitive, with only the main riff on “I still pretend” really resonating. The acoustic moments are much better, and I get the impression these guys would have made a decent easy listening album. In fact, the two acoustic tracks (“Internal” and “Just the things you know”) are the best two songs on the album.
The vocals are atrocious and are probably the most annoying thing to come out of my speakers since my wife played the new Brian McFadden single. In the softer moments they border on mediocrity, but as soon as the singer starts to push his voice in the heavier moments (I think he’s trying to convey anguish) it sounds fucking terrible. I want to get a shotgun and blast my stereo apart (which is quite wasteful considering I could just as easily turn it off) such is the annoyance factor of the vocals.
My overall impression of this offering is that I am listening to some nameless garage band’s demo tape. And that, my friends, is something a band should never sound like, especially if you plan on going somewhere in this business.
